For multivitamins I’ve heard a lot of mixed opinions lately though - for eg if an individual is already eating a balanced and nutritious diet a multivitamin is unnecessary. What are your thoughts on that?

I think one can credibly argue both ways.
If you're 100% certain (very hard to be) that your diet gives you all the micronutrients you need then you can of course skip the multivitamin.
The downside is basically only cost though (virtually no health risk if you pick an established brand).
So I view my multivitamin as an insurance and I'm happily paying $10ish per month for it. 😊
